Downtown San Antonio's Love Lock Bridge Temporarily Relocates

If you're wondering where the Love Lock Bridge went in downtown San Antonio, just look around the corner.

The Love Lock Bridge is not a bridge, but rather a 110-foot fence filled with padlocks expressing people's love. It was moved from from the walkway near the Riverwalk to the Kallison Walk Bridge on Tuesday. It's still close enough to the Courthouse Wedding Chapel that newlyweds can "lock in" their love.

“It clearly is (special) to many people,” said Paul Berry, a spokesman for the city’s Public Works Department, told the San Antonio Express News. “I think the fact that it is so close to the Bexar County Marriage License Office, placing a lock on the fence could be the first official act of marriage for a couple after receiving their marriage license.”

Public Works moved the fence and the locks so that the walkway can be repaired, KSAT reported. Unlike the Ponts des Arts bridge in Paris, France, the locks are not weighing down the walkway, and the repairs are unrelated to the locks.

Once the walkway is fixed, Public Works will move the fence back to its original location. The city didn't say how long the repairs will take or when the fence will be returned.

The San Antonio locks didn't start appearing until after 2012. A couple inspired by the bridge in Paris added their own lock to the fence near the Riverwalk and other couples followed suit.
