Celebrating San Antonio and Hispanic Culture

During the period of September 15th through October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. Recognizing the contribution, culture and influence of Hispanic Americans to the United States history.

Today we celebrate the culture of the Mexican artist, Jorge Marín. For its 300th birthday, San Antonio received a bronze gift from the government of Mexico City and Marin. “Alas de Mexico”, is a set of standalone wings 11 feet tall and 17 feet wide. The sculpture was designed by Marín with the right dimensions to inspire interaction with San Antonians. People can stand in front of the sculpture, and appear to have wings themselves.

The wings represent an international symbol of freedom and liberty. San Antonio has a long, deep-root history with Mexico and influenced many artist and cultural exchanges. That is why Jorge suggest taking a minute to reflect on the relationship between the Alamo City and Mexico, while visiting the sculpture.

The sculpture has many connections to Mexico, but more importantly, it reminds us of the role that arts play in bridging cultures and generations. In a dedicatory video message, Jorge Marín encourages people “to take flight towards their limitless dreams”. This might be referred to the equal hopes and dreams to the “Dreamers,” or DACA recipients.
